Solar panel cleaning maintenance in Stellenbosch and Somerset West

Dust, pollen and bird droppings sit on the glass and cut the light that reaches the cells. This guide covers how often to clean panels in the Cape Winelands, why a regular programme is worth it, what ClearPro charges, and the discount of up to 20% for recurring solar customers.

ClearPro cleaner washing solar panels on a tiled roof during maintenance

ClearPro Solutions cleans solar panels for homes, guest houses and businesses in Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Strand and nearby Winelands towns. The work can stand alone or share a visit with window cleaning. Full service details are on the solar panel cleaning page.

Why solar panels need maintenance

Soiling is the film that builds on the glass: dust, pollen, salt, pollution, leaves and bird droppings. The International Energy Agency PVPS report on soiling losses calls soiling the largest yield loss after the amount of sunlight itself. That 2022 report estimates global annual energy losses from soiling at about 3–5%. A later IEA PVPS fact sheet on measuring and reducing soiling puts average global losses in a 4–7% range.

Those figures describe fleets of solar plants around the world. They are not a promise that your Stellenbosch roof is losing 7%. An open roof that gets real rain can lose less. A roof under oaks, beside a gravel drive, or facing the sea can lose more. The useful point is the same in both studies: dirt is a normal running cost, and a planned clean is part of looking after the system.

A thick patch of bird droppings shades the cells under it. That patch produces less, and it can run hotter than the clean glass around it. A scheduled wash stops the patch baking on through a Winelands summer.

Rain does not replace a clean

It is easy to assume the winter rain will sort a dirty array. Research says otherwise when the dirt is pollen. The US National Renewable Energy Laboratory studied utility-scale plants in North Carolina and found that rain washed some pollen off, but not enough to bring performance back. During peak pollen season those plants lost as much as 15% of performance. Without a planned clean, annual losses at the sites were on the order of 10%. After a mechanical wet-brush clean, output rose by about 5% to 11%.

NREL has also described how panels cool at night, collect dew, and cement fine dust onto the glass. Later rain then has less to grip. The write-up is in NREL’s note on soiling and cemented dust. Stellenbosch and Somerset West see the same kind of year: vineyard, oak and pine pollen in spring, then long dry months. Strand adds salt film between the rains. Waiting for weather is a weak maintenance plan.

Advantages of regular solar panel cleaning

A recurring clean is maintenance, not a once-off rescue after the glass has gone brown. Owners who stay on a programme usually see these benefits.

  • More of the light you paid for reaches the cells. A thin film is enough to hold output down through the months you rely on the system.
  • Droppings and leaf shade do not sit all summer. One shaded corner pulls down more than a light, even coat of dust.
  • The glass stays easier to clean. Cemented dust takes longer than a visit booked before the film hardens.
  • Someone is already looking at the roof. A ClearPro visit is a chance to notice cracked glass, loose cables in the way, or gutters dumping dirt onto the array. We clean. We do not repair electrical faults.
  • The clean actually happens. A date in the diary beats hoping someone remembers in February.
  • You keep one insured team and a written quote. The same contact is there on the next visit. SolarPower Europe’s operation and maintenance guidelines treat module cleaning as part of looking after a solar system, on roofs as well as on large plants.

How often to clean solar panels in the Cape Winelands

Match the gap to the roof, not to a national average.

  • Stellenbosch and Somerset West, open roofs: two or three cleans a year. One after spring pollen and one after the dry summer covers most family homes.
  • Under trees, near a dirt road, or with a lot of birds: about every three to four months.
  • Strand and other sea-facing roofs: salt haze builds between rains, so plan an extra visit. The same pattern shows up on window cleaning schedules in the Cape Winelands.
  • Guest houses, farms and commercial roofs: time the cleans around the season you need the power, and around safe access. Technopark and other commercial sites are quoted once we know the roof.

Skip abrasive pads, household chemicals and high-pressure washers. Pressure can drive water into frames and junctions. Do not stand on the glass. ClearPro uses pure water and soft tools. High or complex access, and arrays of 50 panels or more, are quoted on site rather than on the standard panel rate.

What solar panel cleaning costs

A solar-only clean on a normal roof is a R300 base, then R25 for each panel. If that sum is under R499, the price is R499. A second-storey or double-storey roof is a R600 base, then R40 for each panel. A home and a business pay the same.

  • 6 panels on a normal roof: R499
  • 8 panels on a normal roof: R500
  • 6 panels on a second-storey roof: R840

On the quote, the panel quantity is the number of panels and the base line is labelled Base rate. A normal roof uses a R300 base. A second-storey roof uses a R600 base. See pricing and the solar panel cleaning service. A visit that also includes windows shows the solar lines and the window lines on the same quote.

Up to 20% off when solar cleaning is recurring

Regular customers who book solar panel cleaning on a recurring programme receive a discount of up to 20% on the solar clean. The discount is written on the quote for those repeat visits. How much of the 20% applies depends on the roof, the number of panels and how often we come.

A one-off visit uses the rates above. The one-minute quote on the website and on WhatsApp also uses those standard rates. Ask for the recurring price when you book the programme, on the free estimate form or on WhatsApp. All ClearPro services can sit on a weekly, monthly or seasonal route. The solar discount applies to the solar clean on that route.

Book the panels with the windows

Many customers add the array to a window clean and finish both on one appointment. That suits a family home in Stellenbosch, a Somerset West estate, or a guest house that wants the glass and the roof done before a busy weekend. Frequently asked questions

Does solar panel cleaning help in Stellenbosch?

Yes. Dust, pollen and bird droppings block light before it reaches the cells. How much a clean restores depends on how dirty that roof was. Open roofs lose less than roofs under trees, beside gravel roads, or facing the sea at Strand.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Two or three times a year suits many open roofs in Stellenbosch and Somerset West. Once after spring pollen and once after the dry summer is a practical pair of visits. Roofs under trees, beside dirt roads, or facing the sea at Strand usually need a clean every three to four months.

What is the price for solar panel cleaning?

A solar-only clean on a normal roof is a R300 base, then R25 per panel. The total is R499 when that sum is lower. Six panels on a normal roof are R499. A second-storey roof is a R600 base, then R40 per panel. Six panels on a second-storey roof are R840. Home and business pay the same. High or complex roofs, and 50 panels or more, are quoted on site.

Do regular customers get a discount on solar cleaning?

Yes. Customers who book solar panel cleaning on a recurring programme receive a discount of up to 20% on the solar clean. The discount is written on the quote for those repeat visits. A one-off visit, and the one-minute quote, use the published rates.

Can I clean the solar panels myself?

A ground-level array you can reach without climbing can be rinsed with plain water. Skip abrasive pads, household detergents and high-pressure washers, and do not stand on the glass. Roofs, double-storey arrays and awkward access are safer as a booked ClearPro visit.

Where does ClearPro clean solar panels?

Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Strand, Technopark and nearby Cape Winelands towns. ClearPro does not cover the whole of Cape Town.
